Managing Sound & Devices in Windows 11
Introduction
Windows 11 uses a new Quick Settings panel for sound and devices. If you use Teams or other meeting apps, you may need to quickly switch between headsets, speakers, or microphones. This guide shows you how to manage audio settings, test devices, and fix common sound issues.
Steps
1. Open the Quick Settings panel
2. Switch your audio output (speakers/headset)
Click the arrow (˅) next to the volume slider.
You’ll see a list of available devices (e.g. Laptop speakers, Headset, External monitor).
Select the one you want to use.
💡 Tip: If using Teams, make sure the correct headset is selected in Teams settings too (see article Configuring Audio Settings in Microsoft Teams).
3. Switch your microphone input
In Quick Settings, click the arrow next to the microphone icon.
Select the device you want (e.g. Built-in mic, USB headset mic).
4. Test your sound devices
Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
Under Output, select a device and click Test.
Under Input, speak into your microphone — check the input volume bar to confirm it’s working.
5. Troubleshoot sound issues
Notes & Troubleshooting
Teams often remembers the last device used, so double-check before a call.
If you switch between laptop dock, headset, or monitor speakers, use Quick Settings to change fast.
For Bluetooth headsets, make sure they’re connected before joining a meeting.
If sound issues persist, restart Teams or reboot your computer.
